Srinagar: Director General of Police (DGP), Nalin Prabhat, said on Thursday that Jammu and Kashmir Police is fighting the menace of narcotics with the same determination with which it is fighting Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.
The DGP on Thursday highlighted the achievements made during the first month of the ongoing ‘Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyaan’ at a Press conference here.
The DGP said that Jammu and Kashmir Police is fighting the menace of narcotics with the same determination and seriousness as Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and while security forces continue their strong action against terrorism, equal focus is being laid on narco-terrorism, which poses a serious threat to society and the younger generation.
He said the ‘Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyan’ was launched on April 11 this year under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, and it has witnessed major success within a short period.
Giving details of the anti-drug operations, the DGP said J&K Police has shown consistent performance against narcotics networks since 2023. He informed that there has been a 12-fold increase in the attachment of properties linked to drug trafficking between 2023 and 2026.
He said J&K Police ranked third in the country in 2025 in property attachment under the NDPS Act and secured the number one rank nationally in PIT-NDPS detentions, with 240 such detentions carried out during the year.
The DGP further said there has been nearly a seven-fold increase in NDPS cases compared to the same period last year. So far, 724 FIRs have been registered and 806 people arrested in connection with narcotics-related activities.
He said police have seized 667 kilograms of narcotics and 19,000 units of psychotropic substances during the campaign. Preventive action has also been taken against 24 habitual drug offenders.
Prabhat informed that 97 properties worth around Rs 41.85 crore linked to narcotics trade have been identified and attached so far under the campaign.
Highlighting major achievements, the DGP said Anantnag Police attached properties worth Rs 6.17 crore in a single case, which is the highest attachment made so far during the Abhiyaan.
In another significant operation, Kulgam Police attached properties worth Rs 93 lakh in Belicharana, Jammu, while tracing backward linkages of narcotics networks beyond the Union Territory.
He further said that 41 illegal properties worth nearly Rs 15 crore, raised from proceeds of narcotics trade, have been demolished after following due legal procedures. The DGP also said that illicit cultivation of poppy and cannabis spread over 117 kanals of land has been destroyed across different areas.
He said J&K Police conducted 2,401 awareness and sensitisation programmes in schools, colleges, public places and identified hotspots, reaching more than three lakh participants. He added that 5,238 chemists and drug shops were inspected during the drive, while action was initiated against 151 establishments found violating rules.
The DGP said 4,962 kilograms of narcotics and 6,493 units of psychotropic substances were disposed of during the period. He added that driving licences of 162 people involved in narcotics cases were cancelled or suspended, while registration certificates of 92 vehicles were also suspended or cancelled.
Besides, 10 passports have been recommended for impounding.
Issuing a stern warning to Pakistan-based drug trafficker Shehzad Bhatti, whom he described as an associate of Pakistan’s ISI involved in pushing narcotics into India, the DGP said J&K Police will continue to track and dismantle such networks and their infrastructure.
The DGP appreciated LG Sinha for his leadership and thanked people at the grassroots level for their active participation in making the ‘Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyan’ a mass movement against drugs in J&K.
