New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Friday extended heartfelt greetings to Indians in the country and abroad on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, saying the festival strengthens the bonds of affection, respect, trust and mutual responsibility among people.

In a post on X, the President said: “I extend my heartfelt wishes for the festival of Raksha Bandhan to all Indians residing in the country and abroad.”

In a separate message issued on the occasion, President Murmu highlighted the ancient cultural and spiritual significance of the festival and said the tradition of Raksha Bandhan has been an integral part of India’s worship and culture since ancient times.

“The sacred tradition of Raksha Bandhan has, since ancient times, been a part of our worship and culture,” she said.

The President explained that the sacred thread tied on the wrist with devotion has traditionally been regarded as a holy bond for protection. Referring to ancient verses and mantras, she said the prayer associated with the sacred thread conveys the wish that the bond of protection should always remain firm and unchanging.

She noted that over time, Raksha Bandhan became widely popular as an emotional social festival in which sisters tie a Rakhi on their brothers’ wrists as a symbol of affection and protection.

According to Murmu, the festival goes beyond the relationship between brothers and sisters, helping strengthen feelings of affection, respect and mutual responsibility among friends, family members and different sections of society.

“This festival reminds us that the foundation of every relationship in life is based on trust, sensitivity and mutual cooperation,” she said.

The President also called upon citizens to use the auspicious occasion to make a collective commitment to protect society and the nation.

“Let us, on the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan, resolve to protect society and the country,” President Murmu said.

She further urged people to continue moving forward with the same spirit towards building a developed India.

The President’s message came as Raksha Bandhan was being celebrated across the country, with families coming together to mark the festival and reaffirm their bonds of affection and togetherness.

Raksha Bandhan is being celebrated on Friday. The auspicious Hindu festival honours the unconditional love and lifelong bond shared between brothers and sisters.

On this day, sisters tie a sacred thread called a Rakhi around their brothers’ wrists and pray for their long, healthy and prosperous lives. Brothers, in turn, traditionally reaffirm their affection and pledge to protect and support their sisters.

Beyond the traditional ritual, Raksha Bandhan also celebrates trust, respect, mutual responsibility and family togetherness.
