New Delhi: A shocking incident of violence was reported from Majitha in Amritsar rural ahead of the Municipal Council elections, where an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Punjab Police was shot dead by unidentified attackers while on his way to duty.

The incident has raised serious concerns over law and order and security arrangements in the region during the election period.

The deceased police official has been identified as ASI Joga Singh, a resident of Ghaniye village, who was serving with the Amritsar Police. According to officials, he had left his home at around 5 a.m. on Sunday for duty, as per his daily routine.

Police said that when ASI Joga Singh reached near Hamza Morh on the Fatehgarh Churian Road near Majitha, unidentified assailants approached from behind and opened indiscriminate fire on him. Reports suggest that the attackers fired four rounds, all of which struck the officer, leading to his death on the spot.

SSP Amritsar Rural, Suhail Qasim Mir said: “This morning, we received information that on the Fatehgarh–Choriya Majitha Road, the dead body of a police official, SI Joga Singh, was found. On receiving this information, the concerned SHO immediately reached the spot. The body was found with a gunshot injury. After that, the body was promptly sent to the civil hospital…”

After carrying out the attack, the assailants fled from the scene. Soon after the incident was reported, Majitha Police and senior officers rushed to the spot and launched an investigation. The area was cordoned off, while forensic and technical teams were deployed to collect evidence from the crime scene.

Police officials have also taken possession of CCTV footage from nearby areas in an effort to identify and trace the attackers. Authorities said every possible angle is being examined as part of the investigation.

The killing of a serving police officer ahead of the civic elections has sparked concern among residents and officials alike, with questions being raised about the safety of security personnel and the overall law-and-order situation in the area.
