Jaipur: The Rajasthan Medical and Health Department has issued an alert following a rise in H1N1 swine flu cases in parts of the country, particularly Delhi. Medical and Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar said on Thursday that 146 positive cases of swine flu (Influenza A H1N1) have been reported across the state since January 2026.
He said the government has issued instructions to medical institutions to ensure adequate preparedness for screening, treatment, and referral of patients.
Principal Secretary (Medical and Health) Gayatri Rathore said Rajasthan recorded 146 swine flu cases between January and August 2026. Monthly figures were two cases in January, three in February, 20 in March, 22 in April, 25 in May, 14 in June, five in July and 55 in August. August accounted for the highest number of cases. Rathore clarified that no new or more virulent strain of the H1N1 virus has been confirmed. Citing information from the ICMR, she said the virus currently circulating is the same strain seen previously.
She urged people not to panic, but to stay cautious and seek timely medical advice if symptoms appear.
Swine flu is a respiratory infection with common symptoms including fever, cough, sore throat, runny or blocked nose, headache, body aches and fatigue. Most patients recover with appropriate care and medical advice. However, young children, older adults, pregnant women and those with serious underlying health conditions face a higher risk of complications.
The department has advised people to cover their mouth and nose with a handkerchief, tissue or elbow while coughing or sneezing, and to wash hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitiser. People experiencing fever, cough or sore throat should avoid crowded places and wear a mask when necessary. Adequate rest and fluid intake are also recommended. Those experiencing difficulty in breathing, persistent high fever, extreme weakness, low oxygen levels or other severe symptoms should immediately contact a doctor or the nearest health facility.
Rathore cautioned against self medication and advised people not to take antibiotics or antiviral medicines without medical consultation.
She urged people to avoid unnecessary close contact with infected individuals and refrain from attending schools, offices, social gatherings or other crowded places while unwell.
The department continues to monitor swine flu and seasonal influenza cases across the state. Government medical facilities have been instructed to maintain arrangements for screening, treatment and referral. The department appealed to the public to remain vigilant, avoid rumours and panic, seek timely medical advice and follow proper personal and respiratory hygiene practices to help prevent the spread of infection.
