Respect At Bengal State Secretariat Is ‘Sign Of Victory’, Says RG Kar Victim’s Mother Ratna Debnath

Kolkata: The mother of the RG Kar rape-murder victim and newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA, Ratna Debnath said on Tuesday that the Kolkata Police treating her “respectfully” at the State Secretariat ‘Nabanna’ was a “sign of victory” towards ensuring justice for her daughter.

Speaking to IANS, the BJP MLA alleged that she was assaulted by police personnel during the ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ held on August 9, 2025, during the previous Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal.

“I was not allowed to reach ‘Nabanna’ at that time but yesterday when I went there the police personnel saluted me. They even clicked pictures with me and also touched my feet to seek blessings,” she said.

She added: “I consider this too as a form of victory. Even amidst so much of sorrow in my life, I felt happy at that moment.”

Debnath also said that she was optimistic about justice being served for her daughter.

“I won’t leave the battle without ensuring justice,” she asserted.

Moreover, she said that if justice is not delivered in her daughter’s rape and murder at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital then many such incidents will keep on happening across the country.

She hoped that if the accused involved in this case are given strict punishment, then the number of crimes against women would reduce.

“This is because influential people are involved in this case,” Debnath alleged.

Meanwhile, Justice Rajasekhar Mantha’s bench in the Calcutta High Court has recused itself from hearing the case of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder victim.

The bench noted that there was a surplus of cases in the court.

The state government is likely to form a judicial commission to address the case.

In the interest of justice, the bench was of the opinion that the case could be heard by that bench, which could dedicate sufficient time to the issue.

Reacting to the court’s decision, Ratna Debnath said: “A proposal has been made from the Bengal government’s side to constitute a commission. We will discuss with the Chief Minister (Suvendu Adhikari) and take the decision to form a committee.”
