Kolkata: At least three people were killed, and three more were injured in a collision between a bike and a scooter on the Haldia-Mecheda state highway in Shantipur of Kolaghat police station area in East Midnapore district of West Bengal, officials said on Saturday.

The injured have been admitted to Tamluk Medical College and Hospital in critical condition. The incident took place at around 3 a.m. on Saturday.

A district police officer said, “We received information of an accident at around 3 a.m. We went to the spot and rescued the injured and sent them to Tamluk Medical College and Hospital. Some of them had died. Two two-wheelers have been brought to the police station. Investigation is underway.”

According to local sources, the bike and scooter riders were out to see idols during Durga Puja when they met with the tragic accident. The accident is likely to have taken place due to darkness on the Haldia-Mecheda state highway. The bike and the scooter got twisted due to the impact of the collision.

Local residents quickly started rescue operations after learning about the accident. Police officers from the Kolaghat police station also reached the spot after they received information. The injured were rescued and taken to the Tamluk Medical College and Hospital with the help of police and local residents. They are undergoing treatment there. Their condition is said to be critical.

One of the three deceased lived in Ramchandrapur in the Kolaghat police station area. The remaining two are residents of Srikrishnapur in the Nandakumar police station area. It has also come to light that none of the riders were wearing helmets at the time of the accident. The police are investigating the real cause.

Meanwhile, the Haldia-Mecheda state highway was blocked for some time due to the road accident, leading to the disruption in traffic.

Later, police took charge to control the situation. The death of three people in such a tragic accident has cast a shadow of grief in the area.
