Baripada (Mayurbhanj): One person was killed, dozens were injured, and over 70 houses were damaged when a powerful tornado struck Kia village near Karanjia in Mayurbhanj district on Sunday afternoon. The storm, which lasted around 30 minutes, uprooted trees and electric poles, tore off rooftops, and swept vehicles off the roads.
According to reports, one house was completely blown away, while several others sustained severe damage. An auto-rickshaw was carried away by the strong winds and sank in a nearby pond. Residents described the sudden onslaught of the storm, which left many seriously injured and caused widespread panic in the affected villages.
The injured were immediately rescued and admitted to Karanjia Sub-Divisional Hospital for treatment. The exact number of critically injured is still being assessed. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, with the fire brigade actively assisting in clearing debris and providing aid to affected families.
Sub-Collector Panchpir, Karanjia, Kasturi Panda, visited the hospital and the affected areas to oversee relief efforts. The Karanjia SDPO has also been informed of the incident and is coordinating with local authorities to provide immediate assistance.
