Sambalpur: The Hirakud Dam authorities have opened 14 sluice gates of the reservoir in view of incessant rains in the upper catchment area of Mahanadi and rising water levels in the reservoir.
The water level in the dam stood at 628.15 ft at 6:00 am on Friday, while the average inflow was 2,29,458 cusecs and outflow 2,67,577 cusecs. The excess water is being discharged through 14 gates.
An alert for flash floods has been sounded in the low-lying areas in the region. People have been advised to move to higher altitudes to minimize damages.
