Bhubaneswar: A 14-year-old Class VIII student of Batibeda Ashram School in Nabarangpur district was found hanging from a tree about a kilometre from her school campus late on Saturday night.
The exact circumstances leading to her death are yet to be established, though it is being investigated as a suspected case of suicide.
The girl, a resident of a nearby village, was staying in the school’s hostel. She had returned to the institution from her home on June 25 after the vacation, reports said.
According to preliminary information, the student allegedly climbed over the hostel boundary wall during the night. She was later found hanging from a tree located around one kilometre from the school premises. School authorities alerted the police after the incident came to light.
As there is no mobile network connectivity in the girl’s village, a group of teachers travelled there around 1 a.m. to inform her family about the tragedy. Her parents and other villagers immediately rushed to the school.
The student’s father has lodged a complaint at Umarkot Police Station, seeking a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his daughter’s death and demanding appropriate action if any lapse or wrongdoing is found.
After receiving the information, police reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination.
A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
