Sambalpur: With heavy inflow of floodwater from the upper catchment of the Mahanadi River, the Hirakud dam authorities opened two additional gates on Thursday afternoon to regulate water levels.
According to Hirakud dam officials, the water level in the reservoir is gradually rising due to continuous rainfall triggered by a low-pressure system. To manage the situation, gates are being opened in a phased manner. At present, 16 gates have been opened, compared to 14 earlier, and more gates may be opened if required.
The release of excess water has heightened concerns about possible flooding in the downstream areas of the Mahanadi River. Authorities have cautioned that river bank regions are particularly vulnerable, and residents have been advised to remain alert, stay away from the riverbanks, and take all necessary precautions to safeguard life and property.
The situation continues to be closely monitored, with officials indicating that further action will depend on the rainfall pattern and the reservoir’s inflow levels.
