Bhubaneswar: The authorities of Berhampur University in Ganjam district took action against 17 senior students accused of ragging their juniors in the hostel.
Vice-Chancellor of the varsity Prof Geetanjali Dash informed that four students, who were involved in the ragging directly, were rusticated from the hostel.
Fine has been slapped against 13 other students with Rs 1,000 each. They were asked to submit written undertakings as part of the disciplinary measures.
Those who were expelled from the hostel have been asked to vacate within a week.
Some first-year post-graduate students had alleged that they were ragged by their seniors in the hostel. In a complaint to the UGC, the students alleged that their seniors came to their hostel and continued asking them unnecessary questions in the name of introduction and did not let them sleep.
The varsity swung into action after the UGC forwarded the complaint.
The anti-ragging committee had investigated the allegation. The Anti-Ragging Committee and the Board of Residence held separate meetings to discuss the issue, officials said.
Based on the reports of the committee, the action has been initiated.
