Bhubaneswar: The Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), Odisha, has announced that Environmental Education and Value Education will be made compulsory for Class XII students from the 2025–26 academic session. The new units will be part of the syllabus starting with the Annual Higher Secondary Examinations 2026.

The decision was taken in an Academic Committee meeting held on June 11, 2025, and later ratified at the Council’s Ordinary Meeting on June 25, 2025, under Clause 59 of the OHSE Regulations, 1982. A formal notification to this effect was issued by CHSE.

As per the revised curriculum, a unit titled ‘Environmental Education’ will be introduced in the English (Compulsory) paper, replacing an existing text or section. The questions will follow the current pattern of mark distribution.

Likewise, a ‘Value Education’ unit will be added to Modern Indian Language (MIL) subjects, also replacing a portion of the existing syllabus. The structure of assessment will remain unchanged.

“Both Environment Education and Value Education shall be effective from the Annual H. S Examinations 2026. i.e. The student at present pursuing study in Class XII in 2025-26 session shall appear the examination of newly inducted subjects,” the CHSE notification read.
