Bhubaneswar: In a major operation, police detained two suspected Bangladeshi nationals from a slum in the Tarikund area of Jagatsinghpur district on Sunday. Police also seized a country-made gun and several sharp-edged weapons from one of the houses in the slum.

According to reports, around 30 families have been residing in the Tarikund slum under the jurisdiction of Jagatsinghpur Sadar police for the past several days.

Acting on a tip-off regarding the presence of foreign nationals, police launched a raid on the slum. Several families reportedly fled just before the operation, while those who remained claimed to be natives of Murshidabad in West Bengal. However, police suspect that most of the residents are, in fact, Bangladeshi nationals.

To prevent any untoward incidents, the district administration deployed two platoons of armed police personnel in the area during the operation. Police are now verifying identification documents and other details of the slum dwellers.

The investigation is ongoing.
