Bhubaneswar: A total of 207 migrant workers from Odisha have died while working in other states in the last two years.
This was informed by Labour and Employees’ State Insurance Minister Ganesh Ram SinghKhuntia in a written reply to a query by MLA Upasna Mohapatra in the Odisha Assembly on Tuesday.
The statement mentioned that the state government spends money to bring back the bodies of the workers and perform their last rites. A total of Rs. 30,29,854 has been spent by the government for this in the last two years.
Here are the total expenses incurred by the government for the shifting of mortal remains during the last two years, from 2023 to January 2025.

- Nuapada – Rs 4,00,000
- Puri – Rs 1,38,970
- Rayagada – Rs 90,000
- Subarnapur – Rs 60,000
- Sundargarh – Rs 1,37,000
The Minister also added that if a deceased worker was enrolled in the Odisha Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board, their family receives help in case of natural or accidental death, including funeral costs. Similarly, families of workers under the Odisha Unorganised Workers’ Social Security Board also receive assistance.
Moreover, under the Employee’s Compensation Act, 1923, compensation is provided to the families of workers after considering their grievances.
