Koraput: A 22-year-old woman was swept away and drowned in the swollen Jhanjabati River in Koraput district’s Narayanpatna block on Monday evening, following two days of heavy rainfall.

The deceased has been identified as Kuni Sirika, a resident of Bhalupadar village under Bijaghati panchayat.

According to reports, Kuni was returning home after working in the fields when she attempted to cross the river. She was caught in the strong current and dragged away.

On being informed, Fire Services personnel and local police, assisted by villagers, launched a search operation and later recovered her body from the riverbank.

As the recovery was made late in the evening, the post-mortem could not be carried out immediately.

Police have registered a case and begun an investigation based on a written complaint submitted by the woman’s family.
