Bhubaneswar: Barely 24 hours after the shocking mob lynching incident in Balianta on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, another brutal murder has rocked the capital region, with a young man allegedly beaten to death by a group of youths in Balipatna police station limits.
The deceased has been identified as Rakesh Das of Athantar village under Balipatna police station. Rakesh was reportedly working as a truck driver.
According to reports, two miscreants had allegedly visited Rakesh’s house earlier in the day and demanded ₹20,000 from him. They also reportedly threatened to kill him if he failed to pay the money.
Later in the evening, Rakesh was near Athantar Chhak when more than four youths allegedly attacked him with iron rods and sticks. The assailants allegedly assaulted him brutally before throwing him into a nearby canal.
After receiving information about the incident, family members rescued Rakesh from the canal and rushed him to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident. One person has reportedly been detained for questioning in connection with the murder.
The incident has triggered concern over the rising incidents of violent crimes in the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, coming close on the heels of the Balianta mob lynching case that had sparked widespread outrage.
