Bhubaneswar: A group of 24 tourists who were stranded on Mahendragiri Hill in Gajapati district due to heavy rainfall caused by a low-pressure system have been safely rescued.
According to reports, the tourists, who had visited the hill for sightseeing, got stuck on the hill due to the bad weather. On a tip-off, the district administration carried out a rescue operation in the midnight and cleared the debris with the help of JCB machine to open the road and escorted the stranded visitors down the mountain. Following their rescue, the tourists were taken to a safe location, an eco-resort, where they are currently being provided with necessary assistance.
Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed the Minister of Mines and Steel, Bibhuti Jena, to visit Gajapati and oversee the relief efforts.
The Chief Minister has also instructed the Special Relief Commissioner to provide immediate assistance to those affected by the heavy rainfall.
It is pertinent to mention that the heavy rainfall triggered by low-pressure has caused disruptions in several parts of the district, with landslides and flooding reported in some areas in South Odisha.
