Bhubaneswar: As many as 26 police personnel sustained injuries after being attacked by residents of two villages when the the former were returning after seizing around 30 quintals of ganja on Friday. The incident took place at Pidika village under Mohana police station in Gajapati district.
The villagers, armed with stones and sticks, reportedly damaged six police vehicles and blocked roads. That’s not all. The villagers of Juba and Pidika held the 75-member police team hostage for several hours.
As per reports, police got information about the storage of huge stock of ganja in Pidika village under Mohana police station in Gajapati district. A police team led by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of R Udayagiri Amitabh Panda raided the village early in the morning. During the raid, the police team had reportedly seized around 30 quintals of ganja. While returning, they were attacked by the villagers, who also freed the seized ganja.
Villagers also pelted stones and bricks at the police, holding them hostage. However, the police team was finally rescued after more police were rushed to the village.
The injured personnel were rushed to Mohana hospital and are now out of danger. While no arrests have been made yet, the Gajapati Superintendent of Police has assured to take severe action against those responsible for the attack on the police.
