Bhubaneswar: Three persons sustained critical injuries following a firecracker explosion at Krushnapalli village under Gania police station in Nayagarh district on Sunday.
The injured have been identified as Achyuta Pradhan, Geeta Pradhan, and Bahadur Pradhan.
According to sources, the explosion occurred in the afternoon while firecrackers were being illegally manufactured inside a local poultry farm. The impact of the blast was severe, damaging a nearby asbestos-roofed house and causing parts of its wall to collapse.
Achyuta and Geeta Pradhan were initially rushed to the Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital (DHH). Owing to the seriousness of her injuries, Geeta was later shifted to a hospital in Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment.
“A brick stove (chulha) might have been used by children to store firecrackers. While Geeta was lighting the chulha, an explosion occurred, leading to the amputation of her left hand and visible injuries to both legs. She has been referred to Bhubaneswar for plastic surgery. Achyuta sustained minor injuries,” said Dr Pitabasa Nayak of Nayagarh DHH.
Meanwhile, police have launched a detailed investigation into the incident.
“A probe is underway. Necessary action will be taken upon its completion,” said Daspalla SDPO Madan Mohan Pradhan.
