Paradip: As many as 30 students of Paradip-based Lock Pada Primary School allegedly fell ill after consuming expired iron tablets, on Monday.
The incident took place after approximately 100 students were administered iron pills by their teachers.
According to sources, the iron tablets, which were manufactured in 2019, had expired in 2021. Students were allegedly given these expired tablets in 2024, three years after their expiry date.
Shortly after ingestion, several students complained of stomach ache, nausea, and uneasiness, with some even vomiting. The affected students were promptly taken to the Biju Memorial Hospital at Atharabanki in Paradip. However, the condition of ailing students is stated to be stable.
The incident has sparked outrage with parents of the ailing students locking the main gate of the school demanding stern action against the teachers responsible for the incident. However, the situation became normal following the intervention of Paradip police.
Doctor Nirmalya Biswal said, the iron tablets were past their expiry date, which caused vomiting and stomach infection. They have been administered injections and required medication. Their condition is stable now.”
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of students in the region.
