Bhubaneswar: A female anaconda gave birth to seven anaconda snakelets at Nandankanan zoo here. This is the first instance of anaconda breeding in Odisha, which is being carried out by the joint efforts of Nandankanan Zoological Park and Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT).
The same yellow female anaconda had given birth to a snakelet on Thursday, the zoo officials informed. The zoo officials said at around 5.30 pm today, six live and one still-born anaconda snakelets were born.
Eight live anaconda snakelets have been kept in individual boxes under control environment for temperature and humidity. The mother anaconda is under observation. The OUAT expert Dr Indramani Nath HOD, Surgery, and Dr Vijay Sahoo Prof Gynecology assisted the zoo vets in delivering the snakelets, the zoo officials said.
Eight yellow anacondas were brought to Nandankanan on November 28, 2019 from Chennai Crocodile Bank. Three of these snakes died due to an infection.
