Bhubaneswar: Severe thunderstorms with hail and gusty surface with wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph, lightning, moderate to intense spell of rain are likely to affect some parts of seven districts within the next two hours, according to a nowcast warning issued by the India Meteorological Department.
As per the nowcast warning issued by the IMD at 3:15 pm, Koraput, Cuttack, Khordha, Nayagarh, Jajpur, Balasore, and Ganjam districts may likely be affected by the weather conditions. These districts are under red alert.
Winds are expected to reach speeds of 60-70 kmph, leading to potential damage to thatched huts, minor damage to power and communication lines, water logging in low-lying areas, and damage to standing crops, banana, papaya trees, and orchards.
Residents in these districts are advised to take shelter in pukka structures, avoid taking shelter under trees, suspend farming operations temporarily, and move away from electric poles and wires.
Besides, a moderate thunderstorm warning has been issued for Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Rayagada, Nabarangapur, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Malkangiri, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Bhadrak, Balangir, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Kandhamal, Gajapati, Angul, and Boudh districts. Winds are expected to reach speeds of 50-60 kmph, potentially causing minor damage to loose/unsecured structures, banana trees, and standing crops.
Residents in the affected districts are advised to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. This includes staying indoors during the storm, avoiding travel unless necessary, and keeping a watch on the weather for updates.
