Bhubaneswar: As many as 72 cases of suicide have been reported in government and private schools and colleges across Odisha in the last five years.
In a written reply to a question by Congress MLA from Barabati-Cuttack Sofia Firdous, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi stated in the Odisha Assembly that a total 72 number of students suicide cases have been reported in government and private schools and colleges across Odisha during the year 2020 to 2025 (till 28th February, 2025).
Majhi further informed that the identified causes behind these incidents were mental pressure; harassment by accused; mental imbalance; denial of phone usage in the school hostel; academic stress; misunderstanding with friends; domestic conflict; issues arising out of love affairs; depression related to examination and love affair; home sickness and parental restriction on visiting home; and psychological problems.
