Sundaragada: Police have arrested an accused in the shocking case of attempting to set a young woman on fire by pouring petrol in Jaratoli, Santoshpur area under Bisra police station.
The arrested accused has been identified as Rajat Kiro. He is a resident of the Kinjirkela police station area in Sundargarh. Police arrested him from the Lathikata area. It is alleged that the accused committed the crime after a failed love affair.
Last night, at around 11 pm, Rajat allegedly poured petrol through the window of the house using a pipe and set it on fire. The young woman suffered severe burns in the attack. The house was also completely burnt.
Family members and local residents doused the fire. They immediately rescued the woman and took her to Rourkela Government Hospital. She was referred to Burla from there. After reaching Burla, she was allegedly sent back due to non-availability of beds.
The family then brought the injured woman back and admitted her to JP Hospital, Rourkela. Her condition is reported to be critical. The family has alleged that the incident happened due to unrequited love.
Bisra police have started an investigation into the case. The incident has created panic in the entire area.
