Bhubaneswar: The Additional District Court in Phulbani has sentenced a man to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for an acid attack incident that occurred in December 2023.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict Pramod Kumar Sahu, with an additional six months of imprisonment in case of default.
The acid attack victimized Suraj Kumar Mohanty and his father, Krishna Chandra Mohanty, who were seriously injured in the incident.
According to the prosecution, on December 28, 2023, Pramod Kumar Sahu threw acid on Suraj Kumar Mohanty while he was standing at a betel shop in Phulbani. When Suraj’s father, Krishna Chandra Mohanty, rushed to the spot, the accused threw acid on him as well.
The victims were immediately taken to Phulbani Hospital, where locals caught the accused and handed him over to the police. The court, based on the statements of 17 witnesses and other evidence, convicted Pramod Kumar Sahu and pronounced the verdict. The sentence serves as a stern warning against such heinous crimes.
