Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident, a woman reportedly consumed phenyl at the Bonth police station in Bhadrak district on Saturday.
The woman, identified as Niral Modi, hailing from Ahmedabad in Gujarat, was in a critical condition and admitted to the Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).
Niral was married to Manoj Nayak, a resident of Narsinghpur under Bonth police station. The couple had a love marriage and were parents to a two-year-old son.
According to reports, Niral, an IT company owner, met Manoj when he worked at her firm. Their professional relationship blossomed into love, culminating in marriage. However, their marital bliss soon took a dark turn.
Post-marriage, Manoj allegedly persuaded Niral to start a business in his village, asking her to secure a substantial loan. To support this venture, Niral reportedly mortgaged her house and company, amassing nearly Rs 5 crore. Tragically, Manoj is said to have fled with the money, leaving Niral and their young child behind.
Desperate for help, Niral filed a missing person complaint at the Bonth police station. However, she was reportedly dissatisfied with the progress of the investigation.
On Saturday, overwhelmed by the circumstances, she allegedly consumed phenyl inside the police station.
Speaking to the media, Niral’s brother expressed anguish over the police’s lack of action.
“My sister has been struggling for 90 days. She filed a missing complaint, but no concrete steps were taken. In despair, she consumed phenyl to highlight her plight and seek justice. The police should help victims like her, not ignore them. We demand justice and immediate action against Manoj, who fled after defrauding her,” he said.
