Bhubaneswar: In a pioneering step toward innovation-driven healthcare, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has established a compact, interdisciplinary platform that integrates medical research, life sciences, and technology to transform health-tech ideas into market-ready products.

The initiative is the first of its kind in eastern India and aims to foster collaboration between clinicians, researchers, and technologists to accelerate medical innovation.

As part of this endeavour, 33 start-up ideas and medical technology prototypes were showcased at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where experts provided feedback on product validation and market readiness. The event marked a key milestone in the institute’s effort to build a robust healthcare innovation ecosystem in the region.

Applauding the initiative, Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary, Department of Health Research, Government of India, and Director General, ICMR, said such efforts to blend healthcare, technology, and entrepreneurship will play a vital role in realizing the vision of Viksit Bharat. “Encouraging young innovators to translate ideas into impactful products will redefine India’s healthcare future,” he remarked.

Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, emphasized that the institute is committed to promoting interdisciplinary collaboration through partnerships with institutions such as IIT Bhubaneswar, BCKIC, and ILS Bhubaneswar. “AIIMS Bhubaneswar aims to build an integrated innovation hub for medical technology in the region,” he said.

Highlighting ongoing initiatives, Dr. Biswas shared that the institute has signed MoUs with international universities, including Western Sydney University, Australia, to introduce integrated PhD programmes for young researchers.

The recently inaugurated Central Research and Skill Laboratory, opened by Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda, is aimed at fostering multi-disciplinary research and advanced skill development. Plans are also underway to establish a Bio-Incubation Centre to support innovation in diagnostics, disease forecasting models, and AI-based healthcare tools.

To celebrate its growing research footprint, AIIMS Bhubaneswar observed its 3rd Annual Research Day and 2nd Regional Research Conclave 2025 under the theme “Medical Innovation: The Need of the Hour for Atmanirbhar Bharat, Viksit Bharat.”

The conclave brought together experts from leading national institutions, including IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Kharagpur, VSSUT Burla, NISER Bhubaneswar, IISER Berhampur, ILS Bhubaneswar, KIIMS Bhubaneswar, AIG Hospital Hyderabad, and TMCH Varanasi, alongside 14 start-up firms. The event served as a collaborative platform for medical researchers, scientists, technologists, and entrepreneurs, fostering pathways to translate early-stage ideas into viable healthcare solutions.

The Annual Research Report 2025, released during the event, highlighted AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s research achievements, including over ₹25 crore in extramural grant generation and more than 1,500 research publications by faculty members.

Noteworthy research contributions from the institute span diverse fields — from therapeutic leads for safe anaesthesia and innovative skin graft monitoring systems to yoga therapy for bowel care, micronutrient interventions for maternal health, autoimmune causes of childhood encephalitis, and novel molecular diagnostics for spinal cord tumours. These pioneering studies are poised to make significant national and global impact on clinical practices.
