Khordha: The process of enumerating the winged guests that visit Odisha every year during the migratory season commenced on Wednesday. A total of 21 teams are conducting the bird census in five ranges – Chilika, Balugaon, Satapada, Tangi, Rambha – under Chilika Wild Life Division.
While 19 teams have entered Chilika Lake, two teams have been counting on the shore. Each team has been provided with binoculars, two-way radio (walkie-talkie), GPS scale, and other equipment. All arrangements have been made by the Chilika Wild Life Division and Chilika Development Authority.
The enumeration exercise began at 6 AM today and has to be completed by 12 PM. Following it the teams will gather at Chandrapur and, after totalling the number of birds recorded by each team, the details will be released by 8 PM. Last year, a total of 10,74,173 birds of 183 species were counted.
