Bhubaneswar: The State Disability Front, an Odisha-based organisation has demanded that a disabled person should be appointed as the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities.
In a press meet held recently, members of the State Disability Front said the post of Commissioner for PwDs was created in 2010 and in the meanwhile, there have been four Commissioners who held the post. However, none of them was a PwD.
“Instead of appointing normal people to the post, if the Government considers our demand and appoints a PwD to the post of Commissioner, the disabled people will be greatly benefitted,” said disability rights activist, Jitendra Biswal.
According to Biswal, a person with disability can understand and empathise with the concerns of PwDs like none other. After Sulochana Das, the post of Commissioner for PwDs is lying vacant.
Das has been elected as the Mayor of Bhubaneswar. “Now that the post is vacant, we hope the State Government takes cognisance of our just demand and appoints a suitable person (with disability) to the chair,” Biswal added.
Meanwhile, the Disability Front has started a campaign roping in famous personalities to support their cause. The campaign has been widely received on social media in Odisha and several parts of the country.
