Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday ordered a judicial inquiry into the alleged assault on an Army officer and his fiancée at Bharatpur police station.
This decision came following a meeting with Deputy Chief Ministers K V Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari, Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, and senior officers.
The inquiry will be led by Justice Chittaranjan Das and is expected to submit its report within 60 days, according to the release Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).
The state government has pledged to take strict action against anyone found guilty, emphasizing its commitment to upholding the law and protecting the dignity, safety, and rights of women.
“The state government is committed to taking strict action against all persons or officials who are found guilty”, the Chief Minister said.
In response to the incident, five police personnel from the Bharatpur police station have been suspended, and a case has been registered against them. The youths accused of misbehaving with the Army officer and his fiancée have also been arrested and produced in court.
It is pertinent to mention that the incident occurred on September 15 when the Army officer and his fiancée visited the police station to report a road rage incident, but were allegedly assaulted by police personnel.
Meanwhile, the opposition party, BJD, has demanded a court-monitored SIT probe apart from a judicial inquiry into the incident and has called for a Bhubaneswar bandh on September 24.
