The 14-year-old girl identified as Damayanti Mahanta, a Class IX student was under dialysis for the last few months following kidney failure. She recently suffered from a brain stroke and was shifted to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar from Capital Hospital.
During treatment, she showed no sign of improvement. Subsequently, the girl was declared brain dead by a team of doctors treating her.
After counseling, her parents agreed to donate the organ of their daughter to save the life of an unknown person. Following their consent, AIIMS experts successfully retrieved her liver and sent it to ILBS in New Delhi.
A special green corridor was arranged by the Commissionerate Police for the transportation of the organ to the city Airport from where it was airlifted to New Delhi.
The liver will be transplanted on a patent at ILBS.
Recently on February 15, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced that the last rites of organ donors will be performed with full state honour.
