Kalahandi: A baby elephant fell into an abandoned well at Babenal in Narla Range under Kalahandi North Division on Sunday morning.
According to reports, the elephant calf got separated from its herd and lost its way into Babenal. The calf was unable to spot the pit while trying to locate the herd and fell into it.
A team of Forest Department personnel rushed to the spot after being informed by the locals. An earthmoving equipment has been pressed into service to rescue the calf. The baby elephant was rescued after an ordeal of one hour.
