Cuttack: The newborn baby girl missing from the SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack was a case of misidentification, claimed a family that returned the child a few hours after the incident came to light.
Reportedly, a woman identified as Tilottama Biswal, the wife of one Tapan Kumar Jena from Puri, had given birth to twin girls at the hospital.
One of the babies was admitted to the ICU of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department in the hospital while the second girl was with her mother in the ward.
On Monday afternoon, when Tapan went to check for his daughter he was told that the child had been returned to the parents. Following this, Tapan lodged a complaint with hospital authorities alleging the involvement of their staff in stealing his daughter. He also filed a complaint at SCB Medical police outpost.
While the investigation was underway, a family from the Pratap Nagari area of Cuttack admitted that the child was taken by mistake.
They said that they had a son at the hospital but had taken the girl by mistake. However, the hospital authorities refuted the incident that no such son was born to the concerned woman who had taken the baby girl. She was admitted to the hospital for the last eight days.
Meanwhile, police have detained the couple who returned the child. A probe has been initiated to ascertain the truth and strict action will be taken against whoever is guilty.
