Bahanaga Train Tragedy: AIIMS-Bhubaneswar Starts Handing Over Unclaimed Bodies To BMC For Disposal

Bhubaneswar: The process of handing over 28 unclaimed bodies of Bahanaga train tragedy has begun today.

The bodies which were kept preserved at the mortuary of AIIMS-Bhubaneswar have been handed over to the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC). The civic body had earlier announced to cremating the bodies in a full scientific manner in strict adherence to protocols at Satyanagar and Bharatpur crematoriums.

The bodies are being handed over to the civic body following the guidelines of the State government, Centre, and NHRC.

As per the latest report, three bodies have been despatched. More are being transported through morgues provided by the BMC authorities.

There were 81 bodies were preserved at AIIMS out of which 53 were handed over to their family after matching of DNA sample. However, there were no claimants of 28 bodies.

It has been around four months since the bodies were kept in AIIMS.

The horrific train tragedy, one of the worst rail accidents in the country, had taken place at Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore on June 2. The mishap left around 295 dead and nearly 1000 injured.
