Bhubaneswar: In a key development in the shocking case of a minor girl being set on fire in Puri district’s Balanga area, the police have recorded the victim’s statement in the presence of a magistrate. The statement was taken by the investigating team from Balanga police at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where the girl is undergoing treatment for severe burn injuries. The process was carried out under Section 180 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

The girl, who sustained 70-75% burn injuries, is currently admitted to the burn ward at AIIMS in critical condition. Her testimony is expected to be a crucial piece of evidence in the investigation.

Earlier today, the victim’s mother formally lodged a complaint at the Balanga police station. In her complaint, she stated that her daughter was abducted by three miscreants who had pre-planned the attack, and then set on fire near a river embankment after pouring kerosene on her. The girl reportedly used her presence of mind to escape the assailants before being rescued by local residents.

“My daughter was deliberately targeted. She was going to her uncle’s house when three people kidnapped her and tried to burn her alive. I want them arrested immediately,” the mother said in her statement.

Based on her complaint, the police have registered a formal case. Investigating officials said they are verifying the identities of the accused and are continuing interrogation of the 10 individuals already detained in connection with the case. Forensic analysis of the crime scene is also underway.

The incident has triggered public outrage, with calls for swift justice. Security has been heightened at AIIMS Bhubaneswar to ensure the victim receives uninterrupted medical attention. Police have also erected barricades outside the hospital to prevent crowding.
