Balasore: Acting on a tip-off, Balasore Excise department officials seized brown sugar worth Rs 2 crore and one person during a raid on Sunday. Another accused managed to flee the spot when the raid was launched in their house.
The arrested accused has been identified as Amzad Khan, while his brother Sabir Khan managed to flee.
According to reports, Amjad and Sabir had brought the brown sugar from Madhya Pradesh by train on Saturday and stored it in Arad Bazar. The two brothers planned to smuggle brown sugar from Arad Bazar to various districts of Odisha.
The Excise department received a tip-off in this regard and conducted raid in Arad Bazar this morning.
Balasore Excise Superintendent Sushanta Padhi said a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, has been registered and a search operation is on to arrest others involved in such an illegal activity. The seized narcotic is estimated to be worth Rs 2 crore, he added.
