Bhubaneswar: Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) has registered impressive victories in the students’ union elections held in higher educational institutions across Odisha on Thursday.
Biswajit Sahu of BCJD has been elected as the president of the students’ union of Ravenshaw University in Cuttack, while Sonali Behera has been elected as the president of Ramadevi University in Bhubaneswar.
Biswajit defeated his nearest ABVP rival to win the top post in Ravenshaw University. The victory in the two prestigious universities — Ravenshaw and Ramadevi — is considered significant for BCJD as it faced a stiff challenge from ABVP and other student outfits.
The polls were not without tension. Two groups of students had clashed on the premises of Ravenshaw University soon after the ‘Why I Stand For’ meeting on Wednesday, following which police personnel were deployed on the campus to maintain law and order.
Ramadevi University also witnessed tension on Thursday after BCJD State President Ipsita Sahoo was picked up and detained by police.
In Sambalpur, Swadhin Kumar Acharya has been elected as president of the students’ union of Gangadhar Meher University (GMU) for the 2026-27 academic session. The university announced the provisional results on Thursday.
Sanket Sahu was elected vice-president while Nikhil Agrawal won the post of general secretary.
Meanwhile, ABVP made gains in other colleges. ABVP’s Aryan Mahapatra was elected president at BJB Autonomous College in Bhubaneswar, while Abinash Padhi won the top post at Rajadhani College.
ABVP candidate Kirtibanta Rana won the president post in Berhampur University and the outfit also won in Dharanidhar University. An Independent candidate bagged the president post in Khalikote University.
