Bhubaneswar: Police on Wednesday arrested the driver of a Scorpio SUV involved in a hit-and-run incident in the Sampur area under Bharatpur Police Station in Bhubaneswar.
One person died and around five others are in critical condition after the Scorpio rammed into another car and pedestrians on Sum Hospital road near Bharatpur on Tuesday evening. The impact was so severe that the front portion of the SUV was badly damaged.
According to police, the injured were shifted to hospital and are undergoing treatment. The driver, who was assaulted by locals after the accident, was rescued by police and detained after treatment. There were four persons were in the vehicle.
Bhubaneswar DCP Saravana Vivek M said eyewitnesses were questioned and investigation is underway. A breath analyzer test conducted on the accused driver found no evidence of alcohol consumption, police said.
“The reason behind the accident will be ascertained after questioning the driver. We will enforce Motor Vehicles rules strictly. Everyone should follow traffic regulations,” the DCP said.
