Bhubaneswar: In a sharp attack on the BJP, the Congress has condemned the alleged sexual assault of an Army officer’s fiancée while in police custody in Bhubaneswar.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused the BJP of turning police forces into “predators” wherever it holds power.
The incident occurred after the Army officer, stationed in West Bengal, and his fiancée approached the Bharatpur police station on Sunday to file a road rage complaint. A dispute arose with the police regarding the registration of the complaint, leading to the couple’s arrest.
The Army officer’s fiancée, detained for allegedly misbehaving with police, has since claimed that she was sexually assaulted in custody.
Priyanka Gandhi, in a statement on her WhatsApp channel, described the police’s treatment of the couple as shameful and shocking, calling for swift and strict action.
Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate , Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate highlighted the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP women MPs on the issue, despite the party ruling Odisha. She alleged that under the BJP’s leadership, police forces have become perpetrators of crime, and women are unsafe even in police custody.
In response, the Odisha Police have suspended five officers in connection with the incident, which has sparked nationwide outrage and renewed debates on women’s safety under the current administration.
