Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police has arrested a man for allegedly raping his minor niece multiple times at his residence in the Nayapalli area here, officials said on Wednesday. The accused’s wife has also been taken into custody for her alleged complicity in the crime.
The accused has been identified as Jayakrushna Nayak, a resident of Nuasahi under Nayapalli police limits. His wife, Phulan Nandini Nayak, was arrested for allegedly pressuring the survivor to submit to the abuse, police said.
According to investigators, the minor victim, a native of Kandhamal district, had been residing at her aunt’s home in the Odisha capital to pursue her education. During this period, her uncle, Nayak, subjected her to repeated sexual exploitation.
“The girl’s aunt (Nayak’s wife) compelled her to comply with the accused’s demands, threatening that she would be allowed to continue her studies only if she did so,” a police official said.
After enduring the prolonged ordeal, the survivor approached the Nayapalli Police station and lodged a formal complaint. Based on her statement, a case was registered and an investigation was launched.
“The accused couple has been arrested and produced before a local court. Further investigation into the matter is underway,” said an official from Nayapalli police.
