Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate Police have busted a bike lifting racket with the arrest of four of its gang members. The gang was involved in lifting bikes from parking places of various malls, hats (daily market) and market areas of the Capital City.
Police have seized 35 stolen motorcycles, 40 duplicate number plates, 07 fake Registration Certificate (RC) smart cards, 07 fake RC papers and 25 duplicate keys.
The accused persons have been identified as Krishan Das (36) of Nagapur village under Itamati police limits of Nayagarh district, Chikunta Nayak (35) of Sugadabadi village under Raikia police limits of Kandhamal, Pravat Kumar Nayak (40) of Gunthuni village under Khandapada police limits of Nayagarh district and Ramesh Prusty (31) of Laxmi Prasad village under Nayagarh police limits of Nayagarh district, police said.
“Capital police station and Special Squad in a joint drive have busted an organised bike lifting racket. After stealing the bikes they used to affix fake High Security Registration Plates (number plates), prepare registration etc documents like original documents and then sell these bikes in interior areas like Kandhamal, Kalahandi, etc. as second-hand bikes,” informed Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Prateek Singh briefing newsmen here today.
The DCP said that the gang used to regularly lift bikes from Infocity, Capital Hospital, Kharvelanagar, SUM Hospital, Khandagiri and other places and then parked the bikes in a public parking place in Nayagarh.
“The main accused Krishan Das and another person-Pravat Kumar Nayak, both natives of Nayagarh were first caught by Capital Police. They revealed their modus operandi. Based on information extracted from them the police nabbed another person Ramesh Prusty, a native of Nayagarh who used to prepare fake number plates. Further, on the basis of information gathered from them, another person Chikunta Nayak of Kandhamal was nabbed who confessed to having been receiving stolen bikes from them regularly,” Singh said.
Singh further told that the gang is involved in the theft of at least 80-100 motorcycles and added that the police will get them on remand for further interrogation.
