Bhubaneswar: The Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela has entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest fully seated hockey stadium of the world. The information was shared by Secretary to CM (5T), VK Pandian, who in a video posted on his Instagram handle, apprised Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik of the feat.

The Odisha CM had inaugurated the Birsa Munda hockey stadium in Rourkela on January 5 this year. The Birsa Munda hockey stadium, along with Kalinga stadium in Bhubaneswar hosted the Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup 2023. The Birsa Munda Stadium is built over 15 acres of land in the Biju Patnaik University of Technology campus. It houses a swimming pool, a fitness center and a tunnel connecting the dressing room and the practice pitch. A total 20, of the 44 hockey World Cup matches were played at this stadium.
Expressing delight at the news, the Chief Minister said, “That indeed is thrilling news. I am truly delighted that the Guinness Book of Records had recognised the Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela to be the biggest hockey stadium in the world. I congratulate the people of Odisha and the team that made this possible. I am amazed that it has been built in 15 months. It’s truly a great accomplishment for the people of Odisha.”
