Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has strongly criticized Odisha Assembly Speaker Surama Padhi over her remarks regarding the behavior of Opposition members in the House.
Addressing a press conference at the BJD’s headquarters-Sankha Bhavan in Bhubaneswar on Thursday, senior BJD leader and former Speaker Pramila Mallik expressed displeasure, stating that Padhi’s comments were inappropriate and compromised the neutrality expected from the Speaker’s role.
“The Speaker is expected to uphold impartiality and refrain from favouring or criticizing any particular party, as per the traditions of democracy. However, Padhi’s statement sounds like the voice of the ruling BJP,” Mallik said.
Mallik also accused Padhi of undermining the dignity of the Speaker’s chair by warning that indiscipline from Opposition members during the Budget session would not be tolerated. She further claimed that Padhi had attended a party event and demanded clarification on whether she was affiliated with any political party while holding the Speaker’s post.
Earlier, Speaker Padhi had called upon Opposition parties to play a constructive role and provide meaningful suggestions during the upcoming Assembly session. She had cautioned against creating disruptions, stating that such behavior would not be tolerated.
The comments have sparked a political row, with the BJD alleging partiality and questioning the Speaker’s conduct ahead of the Budget session.
