BJD Student & Youth Wings To Protest Rising Incidents Of Violence Against Women

Bhubaneswar: Intensifying its criticism of the BJP-led state government, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Tuesday announced a statewide campaign by its student and youth wings to protest the rising incidents of violence against women and students in Odisha.

Speaking at a press conference in Bhubaneswar, senior BJD leaders voiced concern over what they described as government inaction in high-profile cases, particularly the Balasore incident, where despite the formation of multiple inquiry committees, no concrete outcomes have been seen.

They also cited similar disturbing incidents in Balanga (Puri), Tumudibandha (Kandhamal), Malkangiri, and other districts, alleging a breakdown of law and order under the BJP government.

The BJD’s campaign will roll out in two phases. From August 1 to 8, college students across Odisha will submit memorandums to their local police stations and district Superintendent of Police (SP) offices.

These memorandums, addressed to the state’s Director General of Police (DGP), will raise concerns about the safety of students on and off campus and demand urgent steps to safeguard women and girls.

The agitation will intensify between August 9 and 14, beginning with Kranti Divas. During this phase, lakhs of students are expected to send postcards to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who also holds the Home portfolio, urging swift action and justice for victims of violence.

“The silence and inaction of the state government are deeply concerning. Odisha’s youth will continue to raise their voice in a peaceful, democratic manner until justice is delivered,” said BJD MLA Byomakesh Ray.

Echoing similar sentiments, BJD MLA Devi Ranjan Tripathy warned that if the government fails to ensure a safe and secure environment for girls on campuses, the party will escalate its protest activities.
