BMC Bans Obscene Dances at Khandagiri Magha Mela Jatra Performances

Bhubaneswar: With the famous Khandagiri Magha Mela set to begin on January 25, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a strict ban on obscene and item dances during Jatra (opera) performances at the festival. Authorities have made it clear that no Jatra troupe will be allowed to stage vulgar dances, provocative acts, or use abusive language during performances at the mela.

The decision was taken during a preparatory meeting held on Friday ahead of the annual religious and cultural fair.

BMC Mayor Sulochana Das said strict monitoring mechanisms would be in place to ensure compliance. She warned that any violation of the guidelines would invite immediate action. According to the BMC, item dances have been completely prohibited in all seven Jatra pandals at Khandagiri this year.

Police and BMC enforcement teams will jointly conduct checks and remain vigilant throughout the performances. Apart from banning obscenity, authorities have also barred any form of provocation or counter-provocation on stage, as well as dialogues that insult individuals or communities through dramatic presentation.

The Khandagiri Magha Mela, one of Odisha’s most popular cultural and religious events, will run from January 25 to February 7. The foothills of Khandagiri are expected to come alive with performances by several renowned Jatra troupes, drawing large crowds of theatre enthusiasts who flock to the venue every year for its powerful acting, music, and dance traditions.

Jatra committee members and organisers have stated that they will abide by all rules laid down by the government. Last year, the issue of obscene dances had sparked controversy after protests by MLA Babu Singh’s “Thenga Vahini” (stick squad), bringing the matter under public scrutiny.

In preparation for the mela, the BMC has held coordination meetings with corporators, standing committee members, Jatra committees, the electricity department, WATCO, the R&B department, and police officials. Extensive arrangements are being put in place to ensure smooth conduct of the event and safety of visitors.

Security will be strengthened with the deployment of both male and female personnel, installation of over 100 CCTV cameras, and intensified police patrolling. A 24-hour control room will function throughout the mela with officers from all key departments present.

Facilities such as toilets, drinking water, lighting, and security arrangements will be provided for Naga sadhus and devotees. The civic body has also decided to restrict the entry of stray cattle into the mela area. Health services, mobile toilets, and additional drinking water facilities will be arranged as required.
