Katak: The bodies of two college students were recovered on Monday after they were swept away by strong currents in the Mahanadi River near Satabatia under Jagatpur area of Katak district on Sunday.
The deceased have been identified as Amlan Nayak (22) and Arjit Sahoo (20). Amlan’s body was recovered by fire services personnel around 11:30 pm on Sunday night, while Arjit’s body was retrieved by ODRAF teams on today morning.
According to reports, four students had gone to the Mahanadi River for bathing on Sunday when they were suddenly caught in strong currents. While one student, Pratyush Swain, managed to swim to safety and raised the alarm, the other three were swept away.
Upon being alerted, rescue teams from Jagatpur police station and fire services immediately launched a massive search and rescue operation. Later that evening, Mukti Prasad Dash (23) was rescued from the river around 9:30 pm and shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Despite continuous efforts, the two students remained missing overnight. Fire services and ODRAF teams intensified the search along the river, eventually recovering the bodies of Amlan and Arjit.
