Bhubaneswar: Police on Friday arrested Mamata Bhoi, an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) at the Sunamodi Sub-Centre under the Khaprakhol Community Health Centre, for her alleged involvement in the sale of a newborn at Sana Gurjibhata village under Lathor police limits in Bolangir district.
The police have also apprehended the individuals who purchased the infant and the intermediary who facilitated the transaction. The arrests were made in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, by Bolangir police.
On Thursday, the Chief District Medical & Public Health Officer (CDM&PHO) of Bolangir suspended Bhoi following her alleged role in the incident.
According to reports, on November 2, Bhoi took the newborn girl from her mother in Sana Gurjibhata village and handed her over to a non-Odia couple. News of the alleged baby sale soon spread, sparking outrage.
Deputy Chief Minister, K.V. Singh Deo, visited Sana Gurjibhata village in the Patnagarh sub-division of Bolangir district to meet the infant’s family.
Singh Deo has directed the Bolangir district administration to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and submit a detailed report.
This case has raised serious concerns about child trafficking and healthcare malpractice, prompting authorities to take swift action to ensure justice and prevent such incidents in the future.
