Bhubaneswar: Brahmapur Railway Station, the busiest rail hub of southern Odisha handling over 162 trains and 25,000 passengers every day, is set to undergo its most ambitious overhaul since its founding. East Coast Railway has sanctioned a Rs 300 crore multi phase redevelopment that will fundamentally reshape how one of Odisha’s most important cities connects with the rest of India.
New Lines & Platforms: A Capacity Leap
At the heart of the redevelopment is a major capacity expansion. The station will gain three additional railway lines and four new platforms, significantly enhancing its ability to handle the growing number of originating, terminating and passing trains. A new station building on the second entry side and extensive yard modifications are part of the same package. The project also includes relocation of the service building and railway quarters, freeing up space for a more passenger centric layout.
Seamless Connectivity
The redevelopment envisions a fully integrated passenger movement system that will ensure seamless connectivity across both sides of the station and all platforms. Unlike conventional arrangements, this elevated structure will facilitate continuous flow. The existing Foot Over Bridge is also being extended to further strengthen passenger movement and accessibility across the station.
Accessibility
The redeveloped station will feature adequate lifts and escalators, making it one of the most accessibility focused stations on the East Coast Railway network. Divyang friendly infrastructure, tactile pathways and level access facilities will be integrated throughout, ensuring inclusive and barrier free movement for all passengers.
Circulating Areas on Both Sides: The Dual Gateway
The redevelopment will address long standing congestion issues by creating fully developed circulating areas on both sides of the station. The main circulating area improvements including road widening, footpaths, drainage, compound wall and landscaping have already been completed. The second entry circulating area is being developed, providing the city with an additional fully functional station gateway.
Platform Upgrades and Operational Efficiency
The project includes refurbishment of platform flooring and existing sheds, along with extension of cover sheds to provide enhanced weather protection. The installation of a Quick Watering System (QWS) will enable rapid and efficient watering of coaching rakes, reducing turnaround time and facilitating faster train departures. Additional platform shelters are also under construction.
Smart Station Features
The redevelopment incorporates modern systems including CCTV surveillance, access control, baggage scanners, passenger information systems and integrated electrical and signalling upgrades. Multilingual wayfinding signage in Odia, Hindi and English will enhance passenger convenience and navigation.
Ganjam’s Pride, Brahmapur’s Identity
The redevelopment of Brahmapur Railway Station marks a decisive alignment of modern infrastructure with the distinct identity of the region. Backed by strong local support, the project anchors the station in the cultural and spiritual fabric of the region and the rich heritage of southern Odisha.
As a key gateway, the station is being reimagined not just as a transit hub but as a landmark reflecting Brahmapur’s tradition. On completion, it will stand as a compelling example of infrastructure shaped by regional identity while delivering a world class passenger experience.
