Bhubaneswar: In a heart-wrenching incident that highlights the extraordinary loyalty of dogs, a pet dog named Foni fought bravely against a venomous cobra in the Chili Pokhari area of Bhubaneswar, ultimately giving its life to protect its owner.
The dramatic confrontation occurred at the residence of Jhuna Jena. According to Jhuna, a cobra suddenly appeared near the house. Foni, along with three other pet dogs, immediately sprang into action to block the snake from entering the premises and reaching their master.
“I was helpless and shouted at my dogs to stop, but they didn’t listen,” Jhuna recounted emotionally. “I tried my best to stop them and even chased the cobra myself, but I failed. Foni fearlessly attacked the snake. In the fierce fight, the cobra bit Foni, but the brave dog continued to fight and killed the snake on the spot.
“Tragically, Foni succumbed to the venom shortly after the battle. The other three dogs also joined in the fight, contributing to the snake’s death. Snake Helpline members were informed and rushed to the spot, but by the time they arrived, the cobra was already dead.
Suvendu Mallick, a member of the Snake Helpline, who reached the location, explained that the dog had initially fainted after being bitten. “The house owner sprayed water on the fainted dog, which unfortunately helped spread the venom faster, leading to its immediate death,” he said.
The incident has left the family devastated but also filled with immense gratitude towards their heroic pet.
