Jagatsinghpur: The Excise Squad of Jagatsinghpur district on Wednesday seized brown sugar (heroin) worth nearly ₹16 lakh during a raid at Jahanpur village under Jagatsinghpur police station limits.
The accused, identified as Prashant Kumar Swain, has been arrested and produced before the court.
District Excise Inspector Pravas Choudhury said the department had received intelligence inputs indicating large-scale brown sugar trading in the area. Acting on the tip-off, the Excise team conducted a planned surprise raid, during which they recovered the contraband from Swain’s possession.
The seized brown sugar has been valued at approximately ₹16 lakh, Choudhury confirmed.
The raid was carried out by a team comprising SI Bhagyalaxmi Dalai, ASI Santosh Nayak, ASI Pinakiranjan Routray, Sabita Nayak, Sukanta Majhi, Om Prakash Bastia and other officials.
Further investigation is underway.
